A Journey Toward Clarity
Understanding is not about agreement — it is about connection.
It builds bridges between people, perspectives, and experiences.
It allows us to see the world through another’s eyes.
The Question That Opened a Door
I recall a conflict with a close friend where we were locked in a cycle of blame, each feeling unheard and unseen.
Finally, instead of defending my position, I asked: Can you help me understand what you’re feeling?
That question opened a door.
Understanding does not demand that we share the same viewpoint.
It invites us to honor another’s experience.
To build a bridge on curiosity and humility rather than insist on being right.
Beginning Within
True understanding begins within.
Self-awareness allows us to reflect on our values,
acknowledge our limitations and embrace growth.
When we nurture our own well-being, we can offer empathy and presence without depletion.
Life’s challenges may be beyond our control — but our response to them is always within our power.
That recognition is where clarity begins.
What Setbacks Teach
Some of life’s greatest lessons emerge from its hardest chapters.
Setbacks have a way of stripping away illusions, leaving us with what truly matters.
Like punctuation in a sentence, the pauses in life give it meaning.
In those moments of forced stillness — when things do not go as planned, when we are asked to stop and sit with what is — we often find the clarity and direction we were too busy to notice before.
Symbols as Anchors
During a visit to a tattoo parlor, I shared fragments of my story with the artist.
When he finished, he explained the significance of the bungai terung —
a traditional Bornean tattoo symbolizing growth and belonging.
As the spiral took shape on my skin, something settled.
Finding your place in the world starts with finding belonging within yourself.
Symbols carry this kind of understanding quietly — a lotus for peace amidst challenge, the Adinkra nea onnim no sua a, ohu for the one who does not know but is willing to learn.
They remind us that understanding is not a destination.
It is a posture we return to, again and again.

Reflect
- How has self-understanding deepened your ability to connect with others authentically?
- What assumptions have you let go of that no longer serve your growth?
- How has embracing discomfort led to greater clarity in your life?
- In what ways do you practice understanding without the need for agreement?
- How does understanding your past shape your present choices and relationships?
Understanding is one of six postures explored in Living With A Lifetime — the first movement of the Living series.
