The Lens of Openness
A branch of the Growth phase.
Humility is the practice of approaching life
with openness, self-awareness, and grace.
It invites us to acknowledge our limitations
while remaining receptive to learning and growth.
Like the banyan, which thrives through an interconnected network
of roots and branches, humility enables us to expand without arrogance —
balancing confidence with curiosity.
Without humility, growth becomes rigid and disconnected.
True expansion requires embracing uncertainty
and remaining open to the wisdom life offers.
The Or Not Mindset
Humility does not ask you to doubt yourself.
It asks you to hold your certainties lightly —
to stay open to what you might be missing.
I know… or not.
What might I be missing or misunderstanding?
I am right… or not.
How can I honor other viewpoints without needing to assert superiority?
I deserve… or not.
How can I appreciate opportunities without entitlement?
I am important… or not.
How can I contribute meaningfully without ego?
This matters… or not.
Will this still matter a year from now?
Applying It
- At work, invite feedback and actually act on it.
The willingness to be changed by what you hear
is the measure of real humility. - In personal growth, view mistakes as opportunities for learning —
not evidence of failure, but information about where to grow next. - In relationships, listen without trying to fix or control.
Sometimes the most humble act is simply staying present
while someone else finds their own way.
The Practice
Learn to say I don’t know, but I’m willing to learn —
and mean it.
Invite feedback weekly and approach it with curiosity, not defensiveness.
What you resist hearing is often what you most need to know.
Celebrate others’ contributions daily —
through acknowledgment, gratitude, or simply noticing.
When we make room for others, we grow larger, not smaller.
Reframe every setback as a lesson.
Ask not why did this happen to me
but what is this asking me to learn?
