The Bridge of Understanding
A branch of the Growth phase.
Empathy is the bridge that connects us to others —
fostering deeper relationships and mutual understanding.
Like the banyan’s branches that provide shelter and nourishment,
empathy allows us to nurture meaningful relationships
built on trust and compassion.
Without empathy, growth becomes self-centered.
True expansion requires understanding both ourselves and others.
The BRIDG Model
Empathy is not passive. It is a practice with a sequence:
Be Present — give your full attention and truly listen.
Am I fully engaged in this moment, or distracted by my own thoughts?
Reflect — acknowledge and validate emotions and perspectives.
What is this person actually expressing?
Inquire — ask thoughtful, open-ended questions.
How can I better understand their perspective without assuming?
Demonstrate Care — show support through small, meaningful actions.
What can I do to show I care?
Grow Together — build mutual trust and understanding.
How can we move forward in a way that respects both of us?
Applying It
- In relationships, listen without interruption —
offer support rather than solutions.
Sometimes presence is the most valuable thing you can give. - At work, notice when a colleague is struggling
before you offer encouragement or a way forward. - In communities, engage with diverse perspectives
before forming judgments.
Understanding does not require agreement.
The Practice
Before responding, pause and observe.
What is the other person actually feeling in this moment?
Practice active listening — focus on understanding, not reacting.
Replace assumptions with curiosity:
Can you tell me more? opens more than any answer can.
Take perspective regularly —
imagine yourself in another’s situation with compassion,
not just analysis.
Empathy is one of three branches in the Growth phase — part of Living Through A Lifetime, the second movement of the Living series.
