The Compass of Authenticity
A root of the Foundations phase.
Integrity begins as the compass that guides your decisions —
aligning actions with your deepest values.
Over time, as it becomes second nature,
it shifts from a conscious compass to an effortless current —
an unseen force that shapes your choices without needing to be checked.
Much like the banyan’s roots anchor it firmly in the ground,
integrity offers the stability to weather challenges
and remain steadfast in your principles.
The Commitment Cycle
Integrity unfolds through a cycle of self-reflection and action —
four stages that reinforce one another:
If I can, I should.
If I have the ability to contribute, is it right to do nothing?
If I should, I must.
What prevents me from acting on what I know is right?
If I must, I will.
Am I willing to follow through with courage and conviction?
If I will, I can.
Does following through affirm my values and beliefs?
Applying It
- At work, uphold ethical standards even when shortcuts are tempting.
If a colleague acts against company values, address it respectfully rather than looking away. - In personal growth, regularly evaluate whether your actions align with your values.
If you value health but neglect self-care, sit with that disconnect rather than explaining it away. - In relationships, practice honesty even when it’s uncomfortable.
Communicating openly is often harder than keeping the peace — and almost always more true.
The Practice
Before any significant decision, pause and ask:
Does this action reflect who I truly am?
At the end of each day, reflect:
Where did I act in alignment with my values today?
Where did I fall short?
Write your core values down. Revisit them weekly.
When decisions get hard, return to the list.
Each week, identify one moment to practice honesty —
a piece of feedback held back, a feeling left unspoken.
That is where integrity moves from idea to action.
Integrity is one of three roots in the Foundations phase — part of Living Through A Lifetime, the second movement of the Living series.
