The Rhythm Behind the Resonance

This reflection explores the rhythm beneath moments of resonance and how formation, remembering, re-formation, and re-membering become one melody within the larger rhythm of human becoming.

One of the most common words I hear today is resonance.

“That resonates with me.”

“I resonate with this.”

“I don’t resonate with that anymore.”

It’s become our way of describing those moments when something feels deeply true,
even before we can explain why.

But I’ve started wondering if resonance isn’t the beginning of the story.

What if it’s the middle?

What if there is a rhythm behind the resonance?

A rhythm that has always been there.

We don’t create it. We discover we’ve always been living within it.

Life moves in rhythms.

The tides rise and fall.
The seasons change.

Our hearts contract and release.
We breathe in and breathe out.

Day gives way to night.
Children become adults.
Generations inherit what the generations before them have cultivated.

Everything alive moves in rhythms.

Perhaps our inner lives do too.

Not as a straight line toward perfection, but as a continual movement of becoming.

I’ve begun noticing that every rhythm follows a pattern.

It is first present.

Then it becomes noticeable.

Eventually it is heard.

What we hear is interpreted.

What we interpret is lived.

And if it is truly life-giving, it is continuing.

Present.
Noticeable.
Heard.
Interpreted.
Lived.
Continuing.

As I sat with this rhythm, I realized something unexpected.

Across seasons, I had been writing one of its melodies without recognizing it.

A recurring pattern of human becoming.

Illustrated scroll depicting the rhythm of human becoming: Formation shapes, Remembering reorients, Re-formation returns, and Re-membering continues, illustrated through pottery, a compass, a path, and a banyan tree.

Formation is always present, shaping us before we ever notice we are being shaped through human formation.

Then something shifts.

We begin to notice.

Sometimes something resonates deeply enough that we remember who we are and what matters.

That remembering becomes interpretation.
Interpretation becomes practice.
Practice becomes re-formation.

Over time, we discover that the destination was never simply becoming a better individual. It was becoming re-membered—joined again to one another, to creation, and to Grace.

Then the rhythm continues.

Maybe that is why certain ideas resonate so deeply.
Not because they are clever.
Not because they are novel.

But because they reveal something already present.

They echo a rhythm we already know.

Something within us recognizes it before our minds can explain it.

Resonance is not the rhythm.
It is our response to it.

A musician doesn’t create rhythm by listening.
They become attuned to it.

An instrument doesn’t invent harmony.
It is tuned until it can participate in it.

Perhaps human life is no different.

Living intentionally, then, is not about controlling life.

It is about learning to hear.

To notice. To become attentive to the rhythms already woven into creation, relationships, communities, and our own souls.

Wisdom is less about possessing answers than about becoming attuned.

The rhythm has always been here.

Resonance is simply the moment we begin to hear it.

The rhythm never needed us to begin.

It simply keeps inviting us to join in.

The invitation has never been to create the rhythm.

Only to learn to live in rhythm with it.
